The PWA Board of Directors shocked everyone when they announced a new general manager of the PWA in Nick Stevens. Fans are skeptical of the board's selection and the job Stevens will do, but never the less Stevens assumed office at a recent PWA event. As the new general manager, Stevens had a lot of tough decisions to make, but none may be more consequential then the fate of the PWA United States Championship.
The PWA United States Championship has a strong lineage. It has been held by distinguished stars such as "The Southern Knight" Bryan Blade, "Outlaw" Tony James, and most recently, Randy "The Rowdy Hillbilly". However, after Randy successfully defended the United States Championship at Red, White, and Bruised; and defeated Gary Gandy for the PWA Heavyweight championship in the same night, an impass was reached. A clause in the PWA bylaws states that one man cannot hold both the PWA Heavyweight and United States Championships at the same time. With a heavy heart, Randy reluctantly relinquished the US title.
For nearly two months now, the United States title has been vacant. No championship had ever been surrendered in the PWA before. Every title to this point had been won and lost in the ring, so there was no precedent for how to handle the situation. This was the conundrum facing Nick Stevens.
Finally, in an interview with Aaron Hurt, Nick Stevens announced the fate of the PWA United States Championship. On September 1st, in the PWA Arena, there will be an over the top rope battle royal. However, their will not be one winner of the match, but two. The final two competitors will go on to wrestle on September 15th in Zanesville, Ohio to crown a new champion.
It was a surprisingly adept and smart decision from the new PWA General Manager. Nick Stevens managed "The Razorback" JT Hogg during his dominant PWA United States Championship reign, so he understands the importance and prestige of the title. The match is open to any PWA competitor save for of course, the PWA Heavyweight Champion, Randy "The Rowdy Hillbilly". Established PWA stars like Wicked Will, Tommy Forte, Jimmy Fahrenheit, and Gary Gandy have already announced participation in the match. They will be joined by several PWA newcomers looking to make a name for themselves. The likes of CRipton, Jeffery John, and Cody Blaze will all be looking to make a statement and capture the championship. One thing is for certain. Nick Stevens and the PWA will crown a new PWA United States Champion on September 15th in Zanesville, OH.
Tickets for both the September 1st and September 15th events are available at PWAOhio.com.
